DAVID HATFIELD

David Hatfield showed early talent, creating his first painting in 1952. At 20 he studied with S. Allyn Schaeffer, as New Jersey Artist and W. Lester Stevens, NA, a Rockport artist. He received a BFA degree from Miami University, Ohio, and began his art career as an illustrator in New York City, completing studies at the School of Visual Arts and the Arts Student League before discovering the art colony in Rockport, Massachusetts and Hoosick Falls, New York. Here he devoted himself to his own work, painting outdoors, capturing the rural towns and farms in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts; the quaint seascapes and towns of Cape Ann; and picturesque cities of Europe. His sensitive portraits are much admired.

Mr. Hatfield has won over 100 awards for his art including the Hallgarten Prize from the National Academy of Design, and the Arthur T. Memorial Award from the Salmagundi Club, both for a landscape by a younger artist. He won the Grand Prize in the Washington Sq. Outdoor Art Exhibits and Grants from the Stacey and Greenshields Foundations. In 1981, American Artists magazine had a cover and article on the artist.  Recent awards for his colorful landscapes have included the First Prize – Gorton’s of Gloucester Award from the North Shore Arts Association in 1988 and 1999, two Silver Medals from the Rockport Art Association in 1999 and the Gold Medal in 2000. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and Who’s Who in America. David was a member for many years of the Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists, American Artists Professional League, and Grand Central American Gallery in New York City. Mr. Hatfield has managed his own gallery, given workshops, and demonstrated extensively. His work is in numerous permanent and private collections, including a portrait of Judge Giallardi which hangs in the New York Federal Courthouse in White Plains, New York.

Mr. Hatfield continually paints outdoors, even in the cold of winter, creating large and small paintings in an impressionistic style, often including figures in the compositions. He states, “I am trying to create a rich painting in which each part is interesting in itself and becomes even richer in its relationship to every other part of the painting. This is a very difficult thing to do, which accounts for history’s few masterpieces and the beauty that these paintings possess. The shapes, forms, colors and subject matter all combine to form a complex and aesthetically pleasing unit”.  He exhibits his work locally at State of the Art Gallery in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
