Emile Gruppé
was born in Rochester, New York, the son of noted artist Charles
P. Gruppé and the brother of Karl H. and Virginia H. Gruppé
studied art at the Arts Students League, National Academy
of Design, and with John E. Carlson, Richard E. Miller. George
Bridgeman, Charles Chapman and abroad. He was a member of the
North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester, Massachusetts
from 1929 until his death in 1978. He was also a member of the
Rockport Art Association, Allied Artists of America, Salmagundi
Club, and the Gloucester Society of Artists.
Gruppé
won prizes at the National Academy of Design, as well as prizes
at the associations of which he was a member.
Thousands of
people studied with Gruppéand attended demos at the Gruppé
Summer School at 32 Rocky Neck Avenue from 1929 to the mid 1970's.
