WE HAVE OPENED A SECOND GALLERY AT 18 PLEASANT STREET, GLOUCESTER IN 2002, ADJACENT TO THE CAPE ANN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

State of the Art Gallery & Sculpture Garden opened in the summer of 1998 in historic Rocky Neck Art Colony, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on beautiful Cape Ann. The colony is the oldest working art colony in the United States.

Rocky Neck's charm and ambiance has been luring artists to its picturesque shores for over one hundred and fifty years. These artists range from Fitz Hugh Lane, who painted here in the 1840's through Frederick Mulhaupt who lived in Rocky Neck and painted the schooners in the early 1900's, to Emile Gruppe, who made the neck his home and painted into the 1970's. Some of the other well known artists who painted in the area are: Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, Maurice Prendergast, Jane Peterson, Cecilia Beaux, and a host of other professional artists.

Sculptors, such as Katherine Lane Weems, Anna Hyatt Huntington, George Demetrios, Paul Manship, Charles Grafly, Anthony de Francisci, and Walker Hancock, who bought their stone from local quarries in Lanesville and Rockport made their home or summered on Cape Ann. Leonard Craske created Gloucester's famous landmark sculpture, "The Man at the Wheel" a permanent memorial to fishermen lost at sea, in his studio in Rocky Neck. Writers of the stature of Louisa May Alcott and Rudyard Kipling frequented the "Neck".

The GALLERY is presented in an antique and GARDEN setting. Over thirty artists and sculptors are represented. Traditional contemporary paintings and figurative sculpture are displayed in a multi-tiered garden and the living space of an antique gothic three-storied home. The second floor gallery changes monthly to feature the works of one of the artists. Weekly evening demonstrations n oil, watercolor, marble carving, clay, wood carving and Japanese sand painting are given by artists and sculptors in the garden. See EXHIBITS for times and dates of current exhibitions. All work can be viewed under the artists biographies. Prices of works not shown can be found in the PRICE LISTS.

The gallery's owners, Sharon Pablo and Roger Armstrong, were board members of North Shore Arts Association (N.S.A.A.), an art association which opened its doors in 1922 and currently has a membership of over 650 artists, patron, and associate members. Sharon was the Secretary and Roger was the President of that organization for three years. Both Sharon and Roger were committee members of the Frederick J. Mulhaupt Retrospective Exhibition held at the N.S.A.A. from August 14 - October 24, 1999.
